What does this picture tell you about how the engine was running?
I know the second cylinder was oily, but what about the white on the exhaust valves on the other 3, what does that mean?

clean burning engine, possibly a little lean. have also seen engines that have similar colouring on the valves that have been burning some types of coolant.

I'm not too fussed BTW, the engine will be having a full rebuild, as will the head, so it won't be burning oil anymore.
I was just wondering if white was normal as it seemed a bit odd to me having 2 white and 2 black in each cylinder, but then it's only the second engine I've had in bits which wasn't already cleaned, so I don't know

your always looking to have a slightly off tan colour to the lavles and plugs for a clean burning engine, cyl 1 was a bit lean but 4 is what you want to see accross the boared.
whilst the heads off why dont you go get it ported?

According to my sources (PPC magazine and edition38 forum) the VW KR head is a really good design already, so doesn't need porting, people have done it before and it's basically been a waste of money.

The cam profile in the KR is pretty good too
People use them in ABF/9a engines as a cheap 'sports' cam
