I dont suppose anyone would know but I bought a QED DIGIT Reference DAC Module today.
I connected it up to the digital optical out of my PS3 - when there's music playing it sounds out of this world, but if I try and play a movie, or when I stop a track I just get some horrible white noise type sound coming out of the speakers.

Can't see much about the module but it looks quite old?,
Is it because the music will be playing in stereo but movies will be outputting some form of surround that it can't deal with?

I did wonder that John, the original QED DIGIT is an old system, but this Reference version is newer, maybe 10 years old though still.
Its just odd that when I stop the music, I get the distortion, as if when I stop music, the PS3 seems to continue outputting some form of signal that the DAC can't process. The PS3 with optical straight into the amp is fine though.

My amp does that when I feed it something it can't deal with, I'd be looking into that first.
Set the PS3 to always output in stereo and see if that fixes it.

It still doesnt play movie audio but it does play music still. I'll probably be better off when I get my CD player and try that.

It's probably because you're feeding it a multichannel source. Plus the PS3 isn't exactly the best transport to be testing it out on. If you have access to another digital source (PC etc) then test it on that.
How comes you went with the Digit? Never heard one myself but their suppose to be pretty decent, although im sure there were a few issues with the power supply (could be wrong). But i think one of the HiFi mags came out with a dual PSU mod for the Digit that was suppose to be worth while doing. No doubt DiyAudio forum has loads of info on these.

Mine is the QED DIGIT Reference which has the upgraded dual Positron PSU's.
Its a newer version than many of the older DIGIT versions.
I'm getting a Denon DCD-425 hopefully tomorrow which i'll try instead.
Agreed the PS3 is not the best transport.
