Im due for an upgrade next month.
I only need a phone for basic things such as texts/calls/internet...
Which is better the 3GS or the 4 or is there not much difference?

4 is better.
May want to get the 3GS if you aren't bothered about the improved camera etc.

4 is better.
HTC Desire is a good Android alternative to the iPhone.

Except flash, widgets, being notified of missed calls, texts etc by a flashing light, or any method for that matter, battery lasting longer than 5 minutes, etc etc.

Does something flash when the screen is off to tell you that there's a missed call/text/email etc that I'm missing?

does it need to flash? it tells you on screen that you have stuff or missed calls. i actually like the fact it doesnt light up constantly. pisses me off when phones do that while you are driving as you have to use it to tell it to behave. iphone, safer for drivers.

My cheap Nokia does this, when i get a text in the middle of the night it sits flashing next to my face meaning i either have to see to it, or have it wake me up every hour or so until it eventually rapes the battery.

Jailbreak and there is an app that can do it, it vibrates every so often. not flashing of the screen. but still its something

Surely an iphone is a very expensive option if you only need to do basic phone functions

I've got an iphone here, it's not anything to do with bitter, it's facts.
Another great problem is the proximity sensor, get an iphone 4 if you want to regularly mute and hang up calls without knowing.

Only thing I can fault with mine is that the signal bars seem to go up and down a bit randomly, full signal one minute, next to none the next (3GS) but I noticed with the latest software update they are claiming to have improved the way the phone calculates its signal strength so will have to see how true that is over the next few days. Other than that as others have said - it just works!

Sorry, I'm making it all up, it's a great phone and has no faults.
