open terminal and type: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings manager
then go to System>Preferences

Network drives are just folders in /mnt I think?

Alt-F2, type gconf-editor
apps --> nautilus --> desktop
uncheck what you want to hide

gnome-shell is where it's at.
Compiz is to be phased out iirc, they still use it now for desktop events, but with the advent of Gnome 3 looming, gnome-shell is talked about being the default wm for it.

Hmm, instructions for newest version are the same
On one site it says "
You can see the "cube" if you keep <ctrl> and <alt> pressed and move your mouse (forward to zoom out, backward to zoom in, left and right to rotate). Normally <ctrl>+<Alt>+ <Left mousebutton> should show you the cube."
Is it not installing or is it not showing up under desktop effects
And what isnt working about hiding the network drives

I don't think the graphics card in the machine I've installed it on is good enough for the effects.
Tried typing what you said but didn't work .
Will try again later. Hair cut at the moment.

Some on board shite.
Installing on another machine now. Will use the first one for installing Ubuntu server onto.
