What business and what do you have?

PC's
Network
Server
Cabling
Switches
Cabinets
Shortel IP phone system
Software
Printers
Vid Conf
TV's
Website

Having a massive budget is great but £500k can so easy be blown.

Dread to think how much money is sat in one of our data centres!

What does the company want

I'd be getting something filled with Intel 710's for that, then take it home to store my films on.

Andrew, WTF are you talking about?

Even though I can claim VAT back on expenses/purchases I still have to charge it on anything I sell.

So you tell me, if a company sold everything at cost price only, how does it make a profit?

If he's spending 500k he'll be getting it at the lowest price Dell or whoever can possibly sell it to him for anyway.

I don't think you actually work in IT Andrew, I think you just drive a van up and down the motorway all day with some stickers on the side.

If id given someone half a mil to spend on stuff in my company I'd want the person to be capable of knowing exactly what they were getting.

Not expecing them to come on Corsa Sport and ask for ideas.

why wouldnt you go virtual? If you have the capital its very much worth it!

Space, Power, DR Recovery - All improved and savings are proven.

It depends on the technology and platform, i.e. I would never put a large enterprise load (i.e. 16/20 core) load into a VMWare image because they are not multi-core optimised enough. We have seen threading issues with 4/6 way images let alone 16/20 way images.

For big loads bare bones is still best. That said you can move towards VMs using things like AIX LPAR which are a much lower level "VM" although not as dynamic, although this is changing with time.

VMWare is great for many things but definately not all.
