rebuilt my 1.4 8v sri and have this very annoying problem, it was working fine before i stripped it to have the head ported and polished, now it will start and idle ok but once i set off and come to a junction and dip the clutch it will drop to zero revs and cut out, i can sometimes save it by giving it some throttle or letting the clutch back up but usually have to restart it, sometimes the ecu light will come on aswell, paper clip test shows 22 and 24, ive checked and cleaned all connections but still the same, any ideas what else i can try? engine is the c14se

Air flow sensor? Crank sensor? Air leak? My old 2.0 8v done this, can't remember what it turned out to be but one of them if I remember rightly

it used to idle ok when i first started it up, but then id get like 100 metres down the road and the eml would come on then if i braked or let go of the accelerator the revs would just cut out

Clean your idle control valve out and your throttle body out with carb cleaner.

Have you checked all the fuses one by one?

I remember a friends car had a similar problem. I changed the speedo sensor in the gearbox and that fixed it..

tried another map sensor but it was the same with that, ordered a tps as that was the only other thing giving a fault code and it was only 8 quid for a new one so hopefully that should sort it out, if not then Speedo reader is next thing, if that was dodgy I wouldnt get working clock though would I? as they work perfect

Speedo was working fine, the EML would come on as you were slowing down and it would stall just before you came to a stop.

well seems it is the speedo sender, tried a new TPS today and if anything it was worse, the EML stayed on constantly and it stalled every time i had the clutch in, maybe its a dodgy one but going to try cleaning the speedo sender first before i buy a new one of those

I have the same engine and mind kangaroos really bad at low speed. Do you reckon its icv related?

not sure pal, my icv seems fine, unless the speed sensor playing up is sending the wrong signals to everything else causing it to run funny, I reset my ecu and the only code to come up now is 24 - VSS

Think you need to run a wire from the gearbox sensor/sender to the Ecu? I did this on my c16xe conversion and it sorted it out!

if it was the vehicle speed sensor, i'dhave thought the speedo needle would drop to zero and the car would cut out once you come to idle speed.
this is what happens on my focus and the vss has just turned up today so job for tomnorrow.

needle does drop quite quickly, sometimes it will catch around 200rpm and come back to life, other times the lights on the dash flicker like its got a short circuit or something, it should be here tomorrow so hopefully it will sort it

ok fitted my vss today, got rid of my eml light coming on but the problem of cutting out when coming to a stop was still there, tried a different new tps and it was still the same, so i did what bally suggested and turned up the screw under the throttle butterfly, drove up to my girlfriends house and it didnt cut out once (i was trying to get it to do it) so hopefully it will be sorted, maybe having the head ported and polished and 8 new valves lets the air flow much better and needed it turning up a bit?
