A paddle clutch features a friction plate that utilises a number of separate sintered bronze pads in a paddle formation rather than a complete disc of organic material as used in a conventional clutch.

The cover will normally have a much greater clamping force than a standard item. This in conjunction with the friction plate produces a greater clamping force and reduces the potential for slippage and warping.

The benefits are that you can utilise the torque of a modified or high output engine, particalarly force induced, without losing anything in clutch slip.

The downsides are that they are costly and heavier feeling and have a more on/off nature in operation than a standard clutch. They can be noisier too.

They are ideal for a competition or high performance vehicle for track and open road use, but fairly dire in trafic.
