Decent cooling is the key for stability. CPU's such as the AMD ones overclock very well. What are you looking at doing?

Im not looking at doing it on any particular system at the moment, just looking into it all for my next big upgrade which will come shortly.
I have a good knowledge of the components needed, the cooling, etc. though so thats no problem.

At the moment Im liking the Core2 Intel's...depends on budget at the time but will be a fairly high spec system.

I've had 3.5GHz out of an old Athlon 2600+ XPM before now... (usual clock is around 2ghz) which was nice...

overlcoking i overrated imo, from my experiences running the chip at a higher frequency actually makes it run slower

You obviously didn't know what you were doing steve.
Turning the multiplier up doesn't really make much difference although it does give you higher clock speeds.
Turning the fsb up actually makes a difference.
Last I read one of the cheaper intel chips could be easily overclocked to perform as well as a more expensive one.
The same as cars yes, the faster one can normally be made even faster but if you get a good deal on a slower chip it can be worth it.
Other thing to consider is do you really need it?
My chip is oc'd from a while ago because it was a brilliant buy at the time.
I don't really need it oc'd for IE and msn though.

john im going to kindly ask you to stfu please, thanks now we have got that out of the way, i will explain that i do know what im doing and i altered many settings, including the fsb, i find the difference it makes neglible for the cost of getting it to run stable

You said running the chip at higher frequencies made it run slower.
That is total shit unless you didn't have a clue what you are doing.
Did you mention anything about the gains not being worth the hassle originally? No you didn't.
If you had I would have said yes I agree in most cases its not.
Although my chip runs perfectly stable at about 500mhz faster with the fsb upped quite a bit.

from what Ive been reading you can get some good gains (on majority of benchmark tests) whilst still keeping a stable system.

I don't know the exact gain I have because it was well over a year ago I done it now, maybe 2, it was well worth it at the time.
You used to have some good points inbetween the shit steve but its just constant rubbish that comes out now.
You can cosmo, some of they core 2 duos are brilliant for it.
They aren't far away from the extreme edition ones when oc'd.

the ruler
so tell me john what experience do you have, apart from dabbling with overclocking at home?

I would say more than dabbling, and what other experience of overclocking would you like me to have apart from having researched in depth and then actually done it and got good gains from it?
I would say that's not far off all the oc'ing experience you could have

saying that super_si did do overclocking and got a wicked system for its time.
bear in mind this was a good few years ago, where the fastest chips were 1.8ghz
he had a 3+ ghz overclocked system, and that really was rapid, but he spent $$$ on n2o cooling.
just tweaking a few bios settings for memory speed, fsb, cpu clock speed etc may gain you a machine that runs a tiny bit faster, not that youd ever notice, and it does make it unstable without forking out for cooling

i was jammy to get the cooling for mine free... vapochill pe with R404a gas, ran at -35c all day at 3.5ghz... (245x14.5)
plenty good enough...
only died when the evaporator decided to piss a leak and cause the graphics card to go fizz-bang...

steve, you obviously know fuck all if u think that
my cpu is o/c'd by 1ghz, only by fsb (multi locked) and the difference in pi munching is huge

this is true but with the rights Chip and cooling good gains can be had. My old athlon xp overclocked ffrom 1.5 to 2ghz and has run stable for 5 years.
However some parts wont like it and as you say can make it worse.

tbh the people who think they will get massive gains by overclocking there systems are the same kind of people who think they will gain 10bhp from fitting an induction kit
