As the title really; do they make anything that you can run your desktop on batteries or something for 10 mins (give you time to save documents etc)?
I recall hearing something a while back, but not sure if it was actually made in the end...

we bought a load for each computer at work, all excited, then came a power cut, everyone went to save, but we hadn't got anything to plug the routers into so the whole LAN was down

You can even get a 4 way power extender with a built in battery/UPS so you could plug anything into it. APC make them.

UPS are normally kettle plugs only.

I had a UPS here on my computers, five years and the power has never gone off but the UPS blew up one day and the computers went off.

They're just straight in to the wall now.

same here, my batteries have gone for the second time (have lasted a couple of years each).
TBh, I cant be assed to sort new batteries, so have gone straight into the wall.

Also Whittie, you will need some serious power to enable to continue working on your PC for a reasonable amount of time.

The piddly little 400VA ones will give you enough time to sensibly shut down your PC and thats about it.
The one I have is 1500VA and thats about the smallest youd want to go.

possibly cheaper..yes.
But then i would have had to sit there in the dark untill the power came back on.

Fortunatly i was able to sit there knocking one out watching redtube, whilst updating my ipod.
For that one reason..its worth it.

we have maybe 12 apc ups's here and we normally end up changing the batteries in at least 1 every 6 months. for some reason the batteries swell up and eventually split. it's a bit of a nightmare because the thing that is meant to keep your machine powered up causes it to switch off.
