IF ANYONE TELLS ME TO BUY A PS3 I'LL PERSONALLY HUNT THEM DOWN.
Been given an Xbox360 which has 3 flashing red lights.
Cracked it apart, cleaned and repasted and put it back in the box. But, as I suspected, when I turn it on the 3 lights still flash. Anything else I can do?
Was a free sexbox so not overly bothered!

Did you put the original x-clamps back on or did you replace with M5 screws? Try tightening it more so it pulls the chip down. If that doesn't work, also disconnect the fans, turn it on and just leave it until it flashes 2 red lights (overheated), then let it cool down and try turning it on now, should work.

The x-clamps are making a good seal brett, that is a dirty design flaw though.
I've just switched it on and it's working again YEYE!

It probably won't if it's just sat on the dashboard. Needs to be doing something intensive so stick a COD disc in or somethin.

Na, not really. Connect it to the net and download a demo? I'm only going off the days when I used to repair them. I could fix them and they were seemingly fine sat there for hours on the dash, but as soon as they got a game in that was working the GPU then they might freeze up or give various kind of lighting effects at the front

I noticed on mine I've had games freeze on me once or twice, I too have replaced the thermal paste but it hasn't RROD'd.
Bear in mind this a Microsoft product, so freezing and crashing is inevitable TBH.

What board has it got?
Mine has the Jasper motherboard, has extra heatsink IIRC.

TBH only fucked ones freeze. Ones that are working fine don't have a single problem. The thermal paste isn't even really the big deal, it's more because the solder is fucked so the more you can pull the chip down the better. Freezing can also be caused by loose RAM or HANA chip.
I thought it was the xexon board that had the extra little raised heatsink attached to the GPU one. The later boards had a completely different single heatsink on the GPU.

Fair enough, I forget, it's been a while. Doesn't really make a difference on the topic, same problems, same fixes

In my case I think it's to do with the laser on my DVD drive being knackered, as I've not had the game freezing problem with games running off the HDD.
When I can be arsed I'm going to get that sorted.

I might take it to bits again and use some screws on it...
